OCD

What is OCD?

These initials stand for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. OCD is generally considered to be a specific type of anxiety disorder whose symptoms include repetitive obsessive thoughts along with compulsive behaviors. Persons with OCD often think that if they do not perform a certain act (such as repeated cleansing, checking locks, repeating religious acts, etc.) disaster will occur. The type of behavioral therapy most effective with OCD is known as Exposure and Response Prevention (ER&P).

ER&P consists of a gradual exposure of the patient to the thoughts and situations causing the most fear and anxiety while refraining at the same time from any compulsive acts. Keeping the anxiety helps the patient overcome.
